How to get athletes to log their sets

What athletes see on their phone, how they check off a set with one tap, and how you see what they really lifted.

The athlete’s phone partway through Back Squat. Three sets are checked off and crossed out, the fourth is waiting, and today’s progress reads 30%.

A program only tells you half the story. The other half is what your athletes actually did: the weight on the bar, the reps they got and the sets they skipped.

Coach Reps puts that in their hands with one tap per set. Here’s what they see, how to get them started, and where you see what they logged.

Where your athletes log

Athletes train in the Coach Reps iPhone app, or in any web browser on Android or a computer. Either way, they see only what you’ve delivered.

Home shows today’s session. Each block is a card with its sets done out of its total, like 0/7, and a tap opens it. Today’s progress at the top fills as they check off sets. On a day with nothing scheduled, it says Rest Day.

The Program tab in the iPhone app shows the whole week. Athletes can open any day’s block there and check off its sets too, so a session done a day late still gets logged.

Show them on day one

Logging is a habit, so start it on the first day.

  1. Invite them before the first session

Send each athlete an email invite, or share a group link that works for 7 days.

  2. Have them sign in at the start

Give them two minutes at the start of the first session to open the app and find today’s workout.

  3. Check off the first set together

Show them the box, and how to change a weight if theirs was different.

  4. Show them the videos

An athlete who doesn’t know a lift can tap Watch Video and see it right under the sets.

Checking off a set

  1. Do the set

The row shows the set, the weight and the reps, worked out from the athlete’s own max.

  2. Change it if needed

If they used a different weight or got different reps, they tap the number and change it first.

  3. Tap the box

The set is checked off, and what they did comes back to you.

On iPhone, the weight moves in steps of 1 or 5 pounds, so a change is quick. That’s the whole job: one tap per set, and a few more when a number changes. When every set of an exercise is done, its name is crossed off. When a whole block is done, the block is too.

If an athlete logs more than their max on a lift, Coach Reps saves the new max and marks the set PR. Their next percentages for that lift work from it.

Videos and notes

If an exercise in your library has a YouTube link, Watch Video shows under its sets. A tap opens the video right there, under the sets.

Watch Video turns to Hide Video, and the exercise’s video opens right under the sets, in the same card.

Notes work the same way. Click Add Coach Notes on an exercise, and the athlete sees your note with their sets. In the iPhone app, they tap Notes to read it. Keep notes short, like a cue they can read between sets.

No signal in the gym

Some weight rooms have no signal. The iPhone app keeps today’s session on the phone, so athletes can still check off their sets. The logged sets send when signal comes back.

See what they logged

On your side, open one athlete on the program calendar. Hover over today or a past day and click the eye in its corner. Review opens with that day’s session.

Every set shows what you prescribed next to what they logged. A weight or a rep count above the plan shows in green, or in your facility’s highlight color if it picked a new one. One below the plan shows in amber. An exercise with nothing logged is marked skipped.

The coach’s review of one Monday. Each set shows what was prescribed, 82% of max at 230 pounds for 3, next to what was logged. Set 4 is above the plan in green, and set 5 is below it in amber.

Make it a habit

  • Deliver before the session, so the program on the phone is the one they train.
  • Keep the program in one place. If it’s on the phone and on a whiteboard, they’ll read the whiteboard.
  • Look at the review after a session, and say something about it. Logging feels worth it when athletes can tell somebody reads it.
  • Message the ones who didn’t log. You can start a chat with an athlete from Messages, on the web or in the iPhone app.

The short version

  • Athletes log in the iPhone app or in any web browser.
  • One tap checks off a set. Tap the weight or the reps first to change it.
  • Videos and coach notes sit right under the sets.
  • The iPhone app keeps logging with no signal and sends the sets later.
  • Open Review on today or a past day to see what they did next to what you wrote.
